Are you Putting off the Pain,

For Another Day?

It Still Hurts Though, Doesn’t it?

As an adult, you no longer have parents making sure you’re doing what you need to do.

Without that oversight you may find yourself saying things like:

  • “We’re getting along so well today. No point in bringing up what happened a while ago.”

  • “Tomorrow.  Tomorrow will be a better day. I know I said that yesterday about today, but I had no idea yesterday what today would be like.”

  • “If it’s not urgent, then it’s not important.”

  • It’s just not the right time.”

  • “I will call my accountant…I will call my accountant…oh SQUIRREL.”

If this sounds familiar raise your hand and give me a high five…because I’m right there with you.  In fact, I’m so good at avoiding things, I can anticipate what I will avoid next.

You may tell yourself it will get done eventually, so what’s the harm?  There seriously may be more pressing matters that need your attention, and there’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing…it’s called PRIORITIZING.

You don’t want to feel the pain of actually: doing the paperwork, getting your truck fixed, shelling out the money for advertising, handing in the resignation letter, having the hard conversation, hiring a coach, or getting a firm handle on your business finances, so you just push the pain.  There’s no pain felt when procrastinating, right?  LIES, ALL LIES!!!!!!

Yes, it may be your least favorite thing to do. Yes, it may cause a degree of temporary hurt, and let’s face it, certain conversations when had, can massively change your life. That fear of impending pain, will have you saying yes to the pain you’re already comfortable with.

HERE’S THE RUB. You’re not postponing the pain; you’re dragging it out

Don’t believe me? Think about something you avoided in the past. Think about how you felt after you took action.  More than likely, there was a sense of relief.  That sense of relief is because your avoidance was causing: pain, anxiety, uncertainty and/or stress, and now that it’s done, the pain is gone.

That really hard conversation you’re not having, the one you’ve put off for some later date, you know when “the time is right”, is still haunting your mind. The paperwork you need to do, has you wondering if there will be repercussions because you’ve waited too long. You staying at that soul sucking job because your future is unclear, may not be giving you the space needed for true clarity.   What may not be urgent and left undone, could become urgent if not taken care of.  Squirrels are around all the time, and will be there after you call your accountant.

What are you avoiding because of the potential pain it may cause?  What type of stress and discomfort is it causing you?  How will you feel after it is done, when you’re on the other side of it?  There’s only one way to get there. It’s time to TAKE ACTION.
